GEO & AEO Explained: How to Get Found by ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude
Search is quietly splitting in two. There's still Google, and there's now a fast-growing group of people asking ChatGPT, Gemini or Claude for a recommendation instead. If your business only exists for the first kind of search, you're invisible to the second.
What SEO, GEO and AEO actually mean
SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) is the discipline you already know: making a website rank well in Google's list of blue links.
GEO (Generative Engine Optimisation) is newer: optimising so that AI tools like ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude actually cite and recommend your business when someone asks them a question, instead of just a competitor.
AEO (Answer Engine Optimisation) is closely related: structuring your content so it can be lifted directly into a clean, quotable answer — whether that's a Google "featured snippet" or an AI assistant's response.
They overlap heavily, but the mechanics differ. Google ranking leans on backlinks, keyword relevance, and page speed. AI assistants lean much more heavily on structured data — a machine-readable layer behind your website that spells out, unambiguously, what your business is, what it does, where it operates, and what it costs.
Why this matters for a small business right now
A growing number of people now research a purchase — including something like "who should design my website" — by asking an AI assistant rather than scrolling through search results. If that assistant has never been given a clear, structured, trustworthy answer about your business, it simply won't mention you. It's not that it's biased against you; it just doesn't know you exist in a form it can use.
This is genuinely an opportunity, not just a threat. Most small businesses in Kenya haven't touched this yet, which means the businesses that do it now have a real head start.
What GEO/AEO actually looks like in practice
Concretely, it comes down to a handful of things added to a website's code, invisible to a normal visitor but directly readable by AI crawlers and Google's own systems:
- LocalBusiness schema — structured data stating your business name, address, phone, service area, and price range in a standard format.
- FAQ schema — real questions your customers actually ask, with clear, direct answers, marked up so an AI system can lift them verbatim into its own response.
- Service and Product schema — a machine-readable description of exactly what you offer and what it costs.
- Consistent facts everywhere — your name, address, phone, and pricing need to match exactly across your website, Google Business Profile, and social pages. Inconsistency actively undermines AI trust in your listing.
The honest limits of GEO/AEO
It's worth being straightforward about what this can't do. Structured data helps an AI assistant find and correctly describe your business — it doesn't guarantee it'll always be the one recommended, any more than SEO guarantees the #1 Google ranking. What it does is remove the single biggest reason a genuinely good business gets skipped: being invisible to the system doing the recommending.
